About the Alabama Room

The Alabama Room at The University of West Alabama houses the library’s special collections and archives. Several collections make up the Alabama Room holdings, including the Alabama Collection.

Mrs. Mary Brock, the University Librarian during the 1930s and 1940s, started the collection when the University was known as the State Teachers College at Livingston. The library was then housed in Bibb Graves Hall.

The core of the Alabama Collection included the titles which Miss Julia Tutwiler had donated to the Alabama Normal College at Livingston during the years she served as president of the school. Over the years the Alabama Room has grown to include rare books, manuscripts, and archives. Please see our Collection Policy for a full scope of the collection.
