INTRODUCTION

The Giuseppe Moretti scrapbook was donated to the Julia Tutwiler Library by Miss Geneva Mercer of Demopolis, Alabama, in 1983. Mr. Moretti designed and executed the casting of VULCAN, and he was the first sculptor to use Alabama marble for works of art.

Miss Mercer, who studied at the Alabama Normal College, Livingston, Alabama, began studying with Mr. Moretti in 1907, and she continued to work in his studio until he died in 1935. She lived with Moretti and his wife in Italy, New York, Pittsburgh, Boston , Sylacauga, and Talladega. Miss Mercer inherited the Moretti scrapbook upon the death of Mrs. Moretti. Miss Mercer died March 2, 1984, at the age of 95.

The original leather-bound 14 1/2 x 14 112 scrapbook contained 511 items. These items have been arranged in four 18 1/2 x 22 112 binders. Included with the scrapbook is Miss Mercer’s publication “Complete List of the Sculpture of Giuseppe Moretti: From the Time He Came to the United States in 1888 until His Death in 1935.” In this publication, as well as in the scrapbook, Miss Mercer gives the description, interpretation, history, and background to Moretti’s most significant works.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Giuseppe Moretti scrapbook contains 511 item relating to his work. These items include 376 photographs, 29 original drawings, 39 letters, 52 newspaper clippings, 2 postal cards, 4 magazine covers, 2 magazine articles, 2 telegrams, 1 dedication program, 1 invitation, 1 original manuscript, and 1 contract. Miss Geneva Mercer’s publication, “The Complete List of the Sculpture of Giuseppe Moretti: From the time He Came to the United States in 1888 until His Death in 1935,” is included in the scrapbook. Miss Mercer’s publication gives excellent descriptions, interpretations, history, and background to Moretti’s most significant works. Similar information is also found in the scrapbook.

While the scrapbook includes some photographs of Moretti’s work before he came to America in 1888 and after he returned to Italy in ca. 1930, most of the collection pertains to the sculpture he designed and created while living in the United States. The scrapbook contains examples of all types and sizes of sculpture. However, it is strongest in sculpture done for public parks in the Pittsburgh, Pa. area, sculpture commemorating historical events, World War I memorials, and memorial tablets and monuments of prominent citizens throughout the United States, but primarily in the North and East. The scrapbook also contains photographs of most of the Moretti sculpture located in Alabama or sculpture located in other places but made from Alabama marble.
