Provides the study of medications through the introduction of the drug classification system. It provides a theoretical foundation encompassing drug actions, adverse effects, drug/food interactions and age-related issues as well as the skill of calculation of dosages. Emphasis is placed on the safe administration of medications in a variety of clinical facilities and situations.
The Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) Major at the University of West Alabama’s Division of Nursing offers students a comprehensive education in just two years. With a focus on hands-on skills in both clinical and simulated lab settings, students receive instruction from experienced nurse educators that prepares them for bedside nursing.
Upon completion of the program, graduates are well-prepared to take the Registered Nurse Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and enter the workforce as registered nurses. Opportunities for career advancement are abundant, as graduates can choose to enroll in bachelor’s or accelerated master’s degree programs, opening doors to broader scopes of nursing practice, such as teaching, administration, research or advanced practice.

All applications that meet the minimum requirements for admission are presented to the Nursing Faculty Committee for review and determination regarding admittance into the nursing program. Admission into the Division of Nursing is highly competitive. Meeting all eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission into the 2-year nursing program.

NS201 Maternal-Child Nursing

Explores the use of the nursing process to assist the individual in adapting to stressors that are short-term crises or chronic in nature and the effects of these problems on the family. Concepts related to maternal-child nursing are emphasized including normal and high-risk antepartum, labor and delivery, post-partum, normal and high-risk newborn, childhood illnesses, growth and development and reactions to hospitalization. Prerequisites: NS103 and a “C” or higher in BY240. Corequisite: NS202.
NS203 Mental Health Nursing
4 Credits
Emphasis in this course is on the use of the nursing process in assisting clients with psychosocial disturbances that disrupt the functioning of family systems. Concepts related to mental health nursing were explored. Prerequisites: NS201 and NS202. Corequisite: NS204.
