Those seeking an English Language Arts Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree generally do so with the goal of teaching English in K-12 schools. The foundation of the program is communicating in the English language in a range of forms. While it emphasizes reading comprehension and writing skills, it extends to speaking and listening skills. This program exposes students to classic and contemporary literature and builds their skills related to communicating the primary themes of these literary works in historical and social contexts. Beyond these skills, UWA’s English Language Arts Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree prepares students to teach reading, writing and literature to elementary, middle, junior high and high school environments

ED382 Methods of Teaching, Language Arts   

3 Credits

Students develop competencies in methods of teaching language arts. The preparation of unit plans and lesson plans as well as an overview of Educate Alabama skills are essential parts of the course. This course is embedded with a field experience that focuses on effective methods of instruction in the language arts setting. Prerequisites: Junior standing and unconditional admission to EDPP. Prerequisite or corequisite: ED300. 

EE402 Problems of Teaching Reading

3 Credits

Causes of reading disability, informal diagnosis and interpretation of reading ability, application of materials and strategies. Concurrent courses: ED408, EE423, EE425, EE426 and EE428. Prerequisites: Junior block, and unconditional admission to the Educator Preparation Program. 

EH488 Field Experience in Language Arts 

3 Credits

Tutoring of students in English Language Arts classes or in the Writing Center under the supervision of a classroom teacher; observation and assistance to the classroom teacher, two to three days a week. Prerequisites: “C” or above in EH301 or EH480.
