The Department of English and History at the University of West Alabama will hold the Kelly Land Essay Scholarship competition in-person on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Participants write a 300-500 word essay on one of several topics complied by the judges. Following the competition, students will be provided lunch and a campus tour.
The first-place winner will receive a scholarship of $1,000.00 for the freshman year. The second-place winner will receive $500.00 for the freshman year. Transfer students also have the opportunity to compete with both a first- and second-place winner being selected.
Kelly Land Hester, for whom the contest was named, was known for her persistence and patience with students who needed help with their English and writing skills. Kelly Land taught English classes in the 1970s.
Students who participate in the Kelly Land Writing Competition may also compete in the James P. Pate Scholarship competition, but a student may not receive both awards.
