The Department of English and History at the University of West Alabama will hold the James P. Pate Scholarship competition on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 from 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M. Participants write a 300-500 word essay on one of several topics compiled by the judges. Following the competition, students will be provided a campus tour.  

The first-place winner will receive a scholarship of $1,000 for the freshman year. The second-place winner will receive $500 for the freshman year. Transfer students also have the opportunity to compete with both a first- and second-place winner being selected.

James P. Pate is an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of West Alabama, where he served as professor, department chair, dean, and vice president of academic affairs over a period of 30 years.

Students who participate in the James P. Pate Competition may also compete in the Kelly Land Writing competition, but a student may not receive both awards.
