Provides the study of medications through the introduction of the drug classification system. It provides a theoretical foundation encompassing drug actions, adverse effects, drug/food interactions and age-related issues as well as the skill of calculation of dosages. Emphasis is placed on the safe administration of medications in a variety of clinical facilities and situations.
The Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) program at the University of West Alabama’s College of Nursing provides a comprehensive, two-year education designed to prepare students for a successful nursing career. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning in both clinical and simulated lab settings, guided by experienced nurse educators. This approach ensures students develop the practical skills needed for bedside nursing.
The ASN degree also offers abundant opportunities for career advancement. Graduates may choose to pursue bachelor’s or accelerated master’s degree programs, opening doors to broader nursing roles in teaching, administration, research, or advanced practice. Graduates of the program may be eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), with eligibility determined by the state Board of Nursing.

Explores the use of the nursing process to assist the individual in adapting to stressors that are short-term crises or chronic in nature and the effects of these problems on the family. Concepts related to maternal-child nursing are emphasized including normal and high-risk antepartum, labor and delivery, post-partum, normal and high-risk newborn, childhood illnesses, growth and development and reactions to hospitalization. Prerequisites: NS103 and a “C” or higher in BY240. Corequisite: NS202.
NS203 Mental Health Nursing
4 Credits
Emphasis in this course is on the use of the nursing process in assisting clients with psychosocial disturbances that disrupt the functioning of family systems. Concepts related to mental health nursing were explored. Prerequisites: NS201 and NS202. Corequisite: NS204.
