Dr. Uchenna Akpom
Longtime UWA business professor Dr. Uchenna Akpom was recently named director of the University’s Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in Rural Business program. The first of its kind degree program was introduced two years ago at UWA and features relevant courses that focus on critical issues as well as strategies and solutions related to rural businesses and designed to offer innovative solutions to global rural business challenges.
Through words and deeds, Dr. B.J. Kimbrough’s influence at the University of West Alabama seems to permeate every corner of campus. She’s a dean. She teaches. She’s the university’s chief diversity officer, chairs UWA’s Diversity Committee and serves on the president’s council.
Up in DeKalb County, near Lake Guntersville and about an hour’s drive from Huntsville, is where Brandon Renfroe teaches science at Geraldine High School. By almost any metric, from demographics and geography to socioeconomics and politics, that region of northeast Alabama’s Appalachian foothills seems as far from Livingston and the Black Belt’s western counties as it can be.
Combining hefty doses of college advising and tough love, Dr. Mary Hanks and two of her University of West Alabama colleagues in January will embark on a mission to help female students of color not only adjust to life on campus, but also succeed.
The University of West Alabama is set to launch its latest doctoral degree program with the rural doctorate of business administration, which has been approved by the university’s accrediting bodies, with classes beginning in August of this year.
