You can help the UWA Cahaba Biodiversity Center (CBC) become Alabama’s leader in biodiversity education—a state with exceptional levels of biodiversity compared with other states. Overall, Alabama’s biodiversity is ranked fourth of all 50 states and ranked first east of the Mississippi River. Highlights of this data include a number one species diversity ranking in freshwater fish, turtles, crayfish, mussels, and freshwater snails. Alabama is also the world center of diversity in the oaks, hickories, and native sunflowers. Unfortunately, Alabama ranks high in another category that is not so distinguished—1st in extinctions within the continental U.S. Much of Alabama’s populace is not aware of these staggering statistics, which provides an educational niche the UWA CBC fills so well.

When a supporter makes a gift to the UWA CBC, they help expand our ability to provide outdoor educational opportunities, support research, and foster a learning environment for students of all ages. These opportunities could instill a passion for biodiversity and other STEM disciplines related to natural history.

Gifts generated during UWA’s Giving Day 2024 will help fund opportunities such as:

• Studying a variety of topics related to biodiversity, for example (but not limited to): geology, aquatic flora and fauna, ecological restoration, terrestrial flora and fauna, water quality, cave studies, dendrology, forestry management
• Funding scholarships to send students to the CBC for a day of outdoor education and fun
• Providing scholarships for college students to do research on the property at the CBC
• Outfitting the CBC with gear and equipment needed for visitors
