Qualifications

Essential:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training, Health, Physical Education, and/or related area.
  2. Certification by the Board of Certification, Inc.
  3. Ability to work effectively as an athletic trainer with intercollegiate sports (primarily football) and with the administration, faculty, staff, and students from the University community.
  4. Ability to clinically supervise undergraduate and graduate students in the athletic training program while providing athletic training services to intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics.
  5. Ability to work effectively as an athletic trainer with community patients in an on-campus athletic training clinical setting.
  6. Ability to teach courses in the field of athletic training, exercise science, and health sciences at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  7. Athletic training experience in football, basketball, baseball, and soccer in the college and/or high school setting.

Desirable:

  1. Master’s degree in Health, Exercise Science, and/or Athletic Training, earned doctorate for Assistant Professor rank.

Functions:

  1. Serve as athletic trainer to the University intercollegiate athletic program (primarily football) and Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center on a daily basis as assigned.
  2. Perform administrative duties for the varsity athletic training program and the athletic training program as assigned by the Director of Athletic Trainer & Sports Medicine.
  3. Supervise and provide clinical instruction of athletic training students in clinical rotations.
  4. If faculty status, teach up to 3-5 credit hours per semester in the area of athletic training as part of CAATE accredited curriculum.
  5. Fulfill other faculty responsibilities consistent with rank.
  6. Perform other related tasks as required by the appropriate administrators.

About the UWA Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center:
The University of West Alabama Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Center was established in 1986 to organize and formalize efforts toward improvement of athletic health care in west Alabama. The Center provides athletic training services primarily to UWA athletics and the University faculty, staff and students. Secondarily, it focuses on providing athletic training services to secondary school athletics and the west Alabama/east Mississippi area. Patients include those with musculoskeletal and orthopaedic concerns ranging from pediatrics to the geriatric population. The Center is staffed primarily by eight full time certified athletic trainers, seven graduate assistant athletic trainers and approximately thirty athletic training students. Support personnel include fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons and non-surgical orthopaedic physicians, physical therapists, exercise physiologists, biomechanists, health & physical educators, and others in related areas.
