The Department of Psychology and Sociology at the University of West Alabama invites applications for a full-time (9 months), tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sociology position to begin Fall 2024.   The department is particularly interested in a teammate with teaching and research interests aligned with the program’s new degree track in Community Health.  Ideal candidates should be able to take leadership in developing undergraduate curriculum and learning experiences related to health, and supplement teaching needs in the program’s other degree tracks which include Traditional Academic Sociology and Criminal Justice.     

Qualifications

Essential:  

  • Earned doctorate in Sociology (ABD candidates may be considered). 
  • Strong commitment to teaching, student success, and evidence of teaching excellence, especially at the undergraduate level.  
  • Ability to work effectively with administration, faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. 

Desired:  

  • Ability to teach and develop a range of undergraduate Sociology courses in both online and campus-based education platforms. 
  • Specialization in Medical Sociology/Community Health and/or Gender Studies. 
  • Ability and desire to conduct scholarly research and seek extramural funding. 
  • Willingness to create institutional connections throughout the region and state with non-profit,

academic, government, and private-sector entities in the area of community health. 

  • Willingness to provide experiential learning and career exploration opportunities for undergraduate Sociology students.
  • Willingness to assist with department and/or institution-wide efforts to promote our major/university in the community and region.

Responsibilities: 

  • Teach a split load of four on-campus and online undergraduate sociology courses per Fall and Spring semester including: Principles of Sociology, Marriage and Family, and a capstone course in Community Health, as well as other upper-level Sociology courses.
  • Work with an instructional designer to design and implement courses in the Sociology major for online instruction.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities such as advising and mentoring students, conducting scholarly research, and participating in University and community service.
  • Perform other related tasks as required by the Chairperson and Dean.                 

Salary: Dependent upon training and experience; includes excellent benefits package.
