The University of West Alabama’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has announced a $1.38 million-dollar grant funded by the National Science Foundation for a partnership with Bevill State Community College, Coastal Alabama Community College, Demopolis City Schools, and University Charter School to enhance STEM curriculum for students. Dubbed Project INSPIRE, the project allows for a total of 20 individual scholarships and 13 stipends over five years for those pursuing STEM careers.

A group from the University of West Alabama explored the historic Fort Tombecbe recently to learn more about Sumter County’s French history. The tour was part of UWA International Programs Year of France series. A picnic on the grounds and tour of the archaeological site was led by site director Dr. Ashley Dumas.

The University of West Alabama has announced more than 500 outstanding undergraduate students named to the President’s List and the Dean’s List for the Spring 2018 academic semester. The President’s List gives recognition to undergraduate students with exceptionally high grades for the semester, those with grade-point averages of 3.80 or higher on at least twelve semester hours credit with no grade lower than a “C.”

Livingston State Farm agent Cody Mordecai has funded a new scholarship opportunity for University of West Alabama first generation students from Sumter, Marengo, Greene, Pickens or Choctaw counties through The FLi Society, a student organization established to raise the profile of the first-generation population at UWA and offer support and encouragement to those students.

Two University of West Alabama engineering technology students recently participated in a 10-week paid internship at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee, the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory. While there, the students worked the laboratory’s specialized areas of scientific discovery, clean energy solutions and security technologies.

The University of West Alabama will honor more than 800 graduates during fall commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 8. The undergraduate ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in Pruitt Gymnasium on the UWA campus. The graduate ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m., also at Pruitt Gymnasium. Presidential Receptions will be held prior to each ceremony and are open to all graduates and their guests at 8 a.m. and noon in the Bell Conference Center.

Students in the University of West Alabama’s welding certificate program recently received a boost of confidence when officials from a national shipbuilding operation visited campus to assess their skills. When tested, 75 percent of the students passed the test and were offered a job with Huntington Ingalls Industries.
