UWA provides Basic Life, Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) and Long-Term Disability coverage through MetLife to its full-time employees at no cost to the employee.

Basic Life and AD&D

Coverage equals 1 times annual earnings, rounded to the next highest $1,000 up to a maximum of $50,000.  The payout is based on your annual salary at the time of claim. 

Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance provides additional financial protection for employees and their families in the event of death or dismemberment resulting from an accident.

Long Term Disability

Coverage equals 66.6% of monthly earnings, based on your annual salary at the time of claim.

All eligible full-time employees also have the option to add at their cost the following benefits:

Voluntary Life

You have the option to increase your individual life insurance coverage, and/or enroll your spouse/children in the Voluntary Life Insurance Plan. After the first 30 days of employment, the purchase of additional personal life insurance will be available during open enrollment and could require proof of insurability.

Swift MD

Enrolling in Swift MD gives you the option to enroll in a teledoc service. This is a service that with give you access to a live doctor over the phone that can assist you with your medical needs.

The cost is $4.50 per month no matter how many dependents you have. There is no co-pay for this service.

The University partners with various 3rd Party entities, including Aflac and Valic. Updated information concerning these products will be distributed to employees when available, during enrollment periods.

Teachers’ Retirement System of Alabama (TRS) Group Term Life Insurance

Active employees contributing to the Teachers’ Retirement System of Alabama and who have completed one year of service are covered under the system’s Pre-Retirement Death Benefit (PRDP) and Term Life Insurance (TLI) plan. 

Active employees contributing to TRS of Alabama with less than one year of service have death benefits equal to the member’s salary at the time of death if the cause of death is job-related.

Pre-Retirement Death Benefit- one times annual salary plus a $15,000 Term Life Insurance for full-time employees.
