UWA named beneficiary of $3 million planned estate gift

The University of West Alabama

The University of West Alabama Foundation has received notice of a $3 million planned gift that will support student success and academic enrichment. The planned gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous is one of the largest in the University’s history.

“Whereas the donor wishes to remain anonymous, which we certainly respect, we want to acknowledge the tremendous generosity this planned gift embodies,” said UWA President Ken Tucker. “It is a remarkable demonstration of support for our institution’s mission, and it serves as a reminder that what we do is important and positively changes lives.”

The planned estate gift, when fully realized, will include property with vast opportunities for recreational and conservation initiatives that align with several existing programs and plans at the University.

“This visionary donation will enhance the University’s capacity to provide an exceptional student experience, especially in the areas of property, forestry, and wildlife management, as well as conservation enterprises,” Tucker said. “We are extremely appreciative of such a meaningful contribution which promises to significantly impact our students, and indeed the entire region, in perpetuity.”

The UWA Foundation is the non-profit organization formed in 1995 to support the University through private fundraising. The Livingston Legacy Society recognizes donors who support the University through a will or trust.

What is a Bequest?

A bequest is a gift that comes from your estate and is designated through your will or trust. The gift can be a transfer of cash, securities, or other kinds of property. You can make a bequest to the University by simply including language in your will or trust leaving a portion or percentage of your estate to the University, or by naming the University of West Alabama as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy.

Remembering UWA with a bequest from your estate will help sustain and strengthen the University in years to come. There are several benefits of creating a bequest to the University:

  • A bequest costs nothing now, yet gives you the satisfaction of knowing you have provided for future generations of students at UWA.
  • You retain complete control and use of your assets during your lifetime.
  • You may modify your bequest if your circumstances change.
  • Gifts to UWA from your estate are exempt from federal estate taxes.
