Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences
Pursue a Fulfilling Career in the Sciences
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”
This statement echoes the sentiment of the faculty in our department. We have a genuine concern for each of our students, and we want them to reach their potential.
The mission of UWA’s Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences is to provide opportunities for students to pursue a quality education and to assist in the students’ development of critical thinking and hands-on skills so that they can realize their quests for a life of self-fulfillment. Simply put, we are here to help students succeed in their endeavors.
The Department has a positive impact on the scientific culture at UWA by placing greater emphasis on undergraduate research. It has been shown that undergraduate research best equips students with the tools and critical thinking skills needed to address the problems they face individually and as global citizens.
This department spearheaded the initiation of an annual Undergraduate Research Symposium where students are afforded the opportunity to present their research findings to their peers, faculty and the UWA community. This initiative has been met with much success, and we anticipate broadening the scope of the symposium by allowing researchers from universities in the surrounding region to participate.
