James P. Pate Scholarship Competition
The Department of History and Social Sciences at the University of West Alabama held the eleventh annual James P. Pate Scholarship competition on Saturday, April 3, 2021. Participants wrote a 300-500 word essay on one of several topics complied by the judges.
James P. Pate is an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of West Alabama, where he served as professor, department chair, dean, and vice president of academic affairs over a period of 30 years.
This year, scholarship awards have increased. The first-place winner will receive a scholarship of $1,000 for the freshman year. The second-place winner will receive $500 for the freshman year. Transfer students also have the opportunity to compete with both a first and second place winner being selected.
Students who participate in the James P. Pate Competition may also compete in the Kelly Land Writing competition, but a student may not receive both awards.
Due to Covid 19 concerns, the 2021 competition took place online. Essay prompts were posted below at 1:00 PM CT on April 3, 2021. Participants had until 3:00 PM CT time to write their essays and email them to Richard Schellhammer at the email address below.
