Kelly Land Writing Competition
The Department of Languages and Literature at the University of West Alabama held the thirty-fourth annual Kelly Land Essay Scholarship competition virtually on Saturday, April 3, 2021. Participants wrote a 300-500 word essay on one of several topics complied by the judges.
Kelly Land Hester, for whom the contest was named, was known for her persistence and patience with students who needed help with their English and writing skills. Kelly Land taught English classes in the 1970s.
The first-place winner will receive a scholarship of $1,000 for the freshman year. The second-place winner will receive $500 for the freshman year. Transfer students also have the opportunity to compete with both a first and second place winner being selected.
Students who participate in the Kelly Land Writing Competition may also compete in the James P. Pate Essay competitions, but a student may not receive both awards.
Due to Covid 19 concerns, the 2021 competition took place online. Essay prompts were posted below at 9:00 AM CT on April 3, 2021. Participants had until 11:00 AM CT time to write their essays and email them to Stephen Slimp at the email address below.
Winners will be announced soon.
