Write Something That Matters: Bringing out the Writer in You
The University of West Alabama Writing Center offers writing assistance to students from any discipline across our campus. We strive to be a space that nurtures collaborative endeavors and values critical thinking, where writers feel welcomed as intellectuals, recognized as individuals, and appreciated as part of the UWA community. Our inclusive, supportive, peer-led academic environment strives to meet the writing and communication needs of all students while helping writers build the confidence and the knowledge they need to succeed in their academic and professional careers.
The UWA Writing Center provides an extensive array of services designed to cater to the unique requirements and choices of all our students. We recognize that many of our students juggle family commitments, employment and demanding timetables.
The Writing Center offers the following services:
- In-person, face-to-face peer tutoring in the UWA Writing Center (during regular business hours)
- Virtual, face-to-face tutoring during regular business hours (via Zoom/Accademia)
- Sessions by appointment OR walk-in sessions (contingent upon tutor availability)
- Other services as specified and developed
Importantly, we do not function as an editing service. Rather, our tutors collaborate with students to enhance their writing and communication abilities across all subjects and domains. Each tutoring session is personalized according to the details shared by the student when scheduling an appointment.
Meet Our Tutors
Kaitlynn Clark
My name is Kaitlynn Sierra Clark. I hail from a small part of Alabama known as Surginer, which is close to Thomasville. I have two cats, whom I love. I also love anything to do with self-expression. I love to dye my hair, I have many plans for tattoos, and I love creative writing! I recently graduated from a small school called Sweet Water High School, home of the Sweet Water Bulldogs! I came to UWA to obtain my bachelor’s degree in Accounting. I hope to get a job at a local public accounting agency, where I will then begin to study for my CPA license. There are many reasons why I chose UWA, from the location to the reputation it upholds. Some of my favorite books are fantasy based, like Eragon and the Harry Potter series. I am here to help you with all your writing needs. If you have a question, ask away!
Mary Kendall Glass
Hello! I am Mary Kendall Glass, and I currently serve as a Graduate Assistant at UWA’s Writing Center. I hail from Linden, Alabama, a nearby town that makes Livingston’s rural territory look like a small metropolis. Nonetheless, I look fondly upon my small-town upbringing, which taught me an invaluable appreciation for my community. Fortunately, when I began my college career at West Alabama, I was not left without a caring community. Instead, I found a place that reminded me of home. The faculty, staff, and students at this university genuinely care for those around them, and my coworkers at the Writing Center are certainly no exception. When I am not in the classroom or the Writing Center, I spend my free time enjoying various hobbies. As an English major, I naturally love reading and enjoy many favorite books, including Milton’s Paradise Lost, Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing. Moreover, I enjoy poetry by Frost, Wordsworth, Tennyson, and Browning, though I must admit that I have a particular aversion to Whitman and his free verse followers. Furthermore, I enjoy binge-watching the same three television shows over and over. Gilmore Girls, The Vampire Diaries, and Friends will forever remain my guilty pleasures. Finally, I make a habit of talking to anyone who will suffer to listen. I love to discuss and debate practically any topic. Just ask Rachel Robinson at the Writing Center. She certainly has endured my long-winded monologues and unsolicited opinions.
Rachel Robinson
Hi! My name is Rachel Robinson, and I am a sophomore English major here at the University of West Alabama. I chose to attend UWA because of the welcoming environment, the impeccable scenery, and the small class sizes. UWA felt like an inviting environment the moment I visited, so I knew I could not pass up the opportunity to attend this school. My fascination with reading and writing is what fueled my decision to be an English major. I used to make up stories and craft characters ever since I was ten. I became heavily inspired by the books I was required to read in school. Soon enough, I was at a point where I read solely because I wanted to, and I genuinely enjoyed it. I could get swept away in an exhilarating plot line, and I knew that one day I would love to create my own that others would read. My dream is to become a young adult fiction author and editor. Ever since high school, I’ve been drawn to that genre and knew that was something I wanted to do. I began tutoring English in my senior year of high school as a teacher’s aide for my favorite English teacher at the time, and I learned plenty about different students’ thought processes when writing a paper. As a tutor at UWA, I will get to the root of the issues and work on how to minimize mistakes that have an impact on the paper as a whole. I would love nothing more than to assist students who have trouble placing their thoughts onto paper.
Savannah Sanford
Hello! My name is Savannah Sanford, and I am a Freshman here at UWA. I am an English and Language Arts major, and when I graduate, I will have my secondary education certification. I hail from Phenix City, AL. It is about three and a half hours away on the far east side of Alabama. When I toured UWA, I found the faculty and staff incredibly helpful. No matter what I may be struggling with, they are always more than happy to help. I love the environment; it makes me feel like I’m back home. It was hard for me to leave my family behind when I moved away to college, but I am taking this new experience in stride, and I love the relationships I have had the opportunity to build since I’ve been here. I love to read and write. Most of my writing is academic based, but I also enjoy writing short stories using prompts that I have found online. I enjoy escaping into a new reality and connecting with the characters I’m reading about or creating. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to work in the Writing Center. I look forward to helping my classmates improve their writing and better understand the writing process.
