Kicking Off Your Nursing Career

At the UWA College of Nursing, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to grow as both an independent thinker and a collaborative caregiver. Through classroom learning, simulation labs, and clinical experiences in local healthcare facilities, you will be prepared to serve patients across diverse backgrounds and throughout every stage of life. Your education will include practice in areas such as acute care, critical care, obstetrics, and mental health—giving you a strong foundation for your future career.

All students admitted to the College of Nursing must comply with the Alabama Infected Health Care Worker Management Act. This law requires that any healthcare worker infected with HIV or hepatitis B (HBV) who performs invasive procedures must notify the State Health Officer, or an authorized designee, of the infection.

Clinical Health Clearance Requirements

Before beginning clinical rotations, all nursing students must meet health clearance requirements set by the College of Nursing and partnering healthcare agencies. These measures are in place to protect students, patients, and healthcare providers, and to ensure compliance with agency contracts and regulatory standards.

It is each student’s responsibility to keep their health clearance current. Expired documentation will result in loss of clinical access, and missed clinical hours due to lapsed clearance may place the student at risk for course failure (see Attendance Policy in the Student Handbook).

Students are required to submit documentation for all mandatory health requirements listed by the College of Nursing in the UWA Academic Catalog and the College of Nursing Student Handbook. Please note, these requirements may differ from those required for admission to UWA, but they are REQUIRED for ALL nursing students who are enrolled in clinical courses.

Where to Find Important Information

Detailed information about Clinical Health Requirements, Progression, Reinstatement, and Graduation is available in the UWA Academic Catalog and the College of Nursing Student Handbook.

The CON Student Handbook serves as the primary resource for College of Nursing policies and procedures. It is accessible within every Blackboard nursing course and available to all students enrolled in NUR classes.

Progression in the nursing program may be terminated if the student has falsified information submitted on the application for admission to the University and/or the UWA College of Nursing. Dismissal for misconduct will be handled according to the Code of Student Conduct as outlined in the UWA Student Handbook and the Progression Policy of the UWA CON Student Handbook.
