It's Time to Apply for Housing

The University of West Alabama requires all freshmen to live on campus for up to one academic year. Living on campus provides educational and social benefits not available to students who live off campus. The residence halls provide students with a supportive living environment, proximity to academic resources, and convenient access to organized student activities. Students first enrolling in the summer are required to live on campus during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Students first enrolling in the fall are required to live on campus during the fall and spring semesters. Students first enrolling in the spring are required to live on campus during the spring semester.  Additional details are available at Freshman Residency Requirement. Freshmen seeking an exemption to the housing requirement must fill out an online Freshman Housing Exemption Form and must submit the form and the required documents by the published deadlines. 

After your first year of college, you will be given the opportunity to choose where you want to live from a variety of residence hall options. Priority in assignment is based on each student’s cumulative grade point average and credit hours earned. This means that the better you do in school, the higher the priority you will have when choosing your residence hall after your freshman year.  More information is available at

These plans refer to the standard minimum meal plan required of the particular residence hall and how many meals are provided each week. Please note that new freshmen are generally assigned to Gilbert Hall. If a new freshman is assigned to another residence hall, an All Access meal plan will still be required.

You are encouraged to apply for space in the residence halls as early as possible. For the fall semester, priority in assignments for transfer students is given to applicants applying by March 1. Priority for new freshmen is given to applicants applying by May 15. You may still apply for housing after these dates, but space will be limited. If you apply after your priority deadline, you may be assigned to a space on a temporary basis until a permanent room becomes available. While applications will continue to be accepted until all beds have been assigned, the Housing Office cannot guarantee campus housing to anyone that applies for fall semester housing after May 15.

Some of the units are government subsidized and rental rates are based on income. These have been designated with the following: BOI (Based on Income). No endorsement by the University is made or implied by being listed in this table. The information in this table has been collected by the Housing Office to assist students, especially graduate students, married students and students with children, in locating apartments near the University. There is no on campus married student housing.
