Sigma Tau Delta
UWA has an active chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Throughout the fall and spring semesters, Sigma Tau Delta members conduct meetings; perform literacy-based service and outreach; host departmental receptions, lectures, creative writing events, and film viewings; submit scholarly and creative work to the annual Sigma Tau Delta convention and to Sigma Tau Delta publications; compete for departmental and Sigma Tau Delta writing awards and scholarships; attend performances at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and other venues; and collaborate with other honor societies and campus organizations to offer career and professional development seminars.
The Chi Omicron chapter of Sigma Tau Delta was established at UWA in 1983. Each spring, new members are inducted into the chapter. Candidates for undergraduate membership must have an overall 3.0 GPA and have completed a minimum of twelve hours of courses in English language or literature (EH 101/103, EH 102/104, and both 200-level surveys in either British or American literature).
