The Clinical Exemption Policy allows LPNs to validate proficiency in critical skills required in the CON’s curriculum.
- The LPN must meet the CON’s admission requirements and:
- Present evidence of licensure as a licensed practical nurse to the Chairperson.
- Submit transcripts verifying completion of all prerequisite course requirements with a minimum grade of C.
- have completed at least one year of clinical practice in a hospital setting within the past three years. Written validation from the employer must be presented at the time of application.
- Following acceptance, the student is eligible to challenge the clinical component of NS 102.
- To challenge the clinical component of NS 102, the student must complete the following procedures:
- Establish the date and time for the challenge of required skills with the course coordinator.
- Obtain the required skills checklists from the course coordinator at the beginning of the semester.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all of the following required skills in the course on the first attempt.
- Required Skills
- Medication Administration
- Vital Signs
- Dosage Critical
- Physical Assessment
- Foley Catheter
- IV Insertion
- A passing grade on all required skills is necessary for successfully challenging the clinical component of NS 102. If successful in the clinical challenge, the student is not required to attend the clinical component of the course but must meet all classroom requirements.
- Students will be required to attend one clinical session in the spring semester (NS 102) to validate nursing skills and develop a care plan.
- Students will be required to attend a Human Patient Simulation session.
