Tyler Strickland

Director of Bands

Tyler Strickland serves as Director of Bands at the University of West Alabama. He conducts the UWA Wind Ensemble and chamber ensembles, and directs the West Alabama Marching Band. Dr. Strickland completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting at the University of Iowa. While at Iowa he served as guest conductor of the Iowa Symphony Band and Concert Band and was the primary conductor of the University Band on several occasions. Dr. Strickland also served as a graduate staff member for the Hawkeye Marching Band where he designed drill and arranged music for a number of halftime shows during his three seasons, and served as primary conductor of the Iowa Pep Band for men’s and women’s basketball during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. 

Prior to his studies at Iowa, Dr. Strickland was the Director of Bands at Reeltown High School in Notasulga, AL for six years, and Director of Bands at Ackerman High School in Ackerman, MS for the two years prior. During his time at both schools he taught band to students in grades five through twelve and was responsible for all aspects of the band programs including concert bands, jazz band, marching band, and pep bands. At Reeltown his concert ensembles received superior ratings, and his marching bands consistently won their class at marching contests across the State of Alabama. 

Dr. Strickland holds memberships in the Alabama Bandmasters Association, National Association for Music Education, College Band Directors National Association, the International Clarinet Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He met his wife Ashley in the marching band at Auburn and they have three Labrador Retrievers, Daisy, Zeke, and Lovey.
