Master of Science in Physical Education
(Non-Certification)

Program Admission Requirements

To be admitted to this program, the prospective student must meet all requirements for admission to the School of Graduate Studies. Teacher certification is not necessary for this degree program. However, students in this program must concentrate in the same field as their undergraduate major or have earned a minimum of 30 semester hours in the desired field. If a student wishes to change fields, undergraduate course work may be required to complete any deficiencies that may exist in the new discipline.  This degree does not qualify a student for any teaching certificate in the State of Alabama. Out-of-state students should check carefully the certification requirements of their respective states.

I. Professional Courses: 6 hours

  • ED 504. Techniques of Educational Research (3)
    OR
    PE 540. Techniques of Research in Human Performance (3)
  • ED 506. Educational Statistics (3)

II. Concentration Courses: 27 hours

A. Choose one of the following emphasis areas: 18 hours

1. Athletic Training
BOC certification or eligibility for BOC certification is required for this emphasis.

Six hours from the following:

  • PE 575. Emergency Management of Athletic Injuries (1-3)
  • PE 576. Sports Medicine Seminar and Workshop (1-3)

Twelve hours from the following:

  • PE 509. Internship (3)
  • PE 510. Protective Techniques for Injuries (3)
  • PE 542. Sport and Exercise Nutrition (3)
  • PE 543. Kinesiology (3)
  • PE 570. Development of Strength and Conditioning Programs (3)
  • PE 572. Performance Enhancement Specialist (3)
  • PE 574. Corrective Exercise Specialist (3)

2. Exercise Science

Three hours from the following:

  • PE 509. Internship (3)
  • PE 599. Thesis (1-3)

Fifteen hours from the following:

  • PE 540. Techniques of Research in Human Performance (3)
  • PE 542. Sport and Exercise Nutrition (3)
  • PE 543. Kinesiology (3)
  • PE 544. Exercise Physiology (3)
  • PE 551. Exercise Testing and Prescription (3)
  • PE 570. Development of Strength and Conditioning Programs (3)
  • PE 572. Performance Enhancement Specialist (3)
  • PE 574. Corrective Exercise Specialist (3)

3. Physical Education

Fifteen hours from the following:

  • PE 520. Physical Education in the Elementary School (3)
  • PE 522. Curriculum Design in School Health and Physical Education (3)
  • PE 523. Adapted Physical Education (3)
  • PE 524. Teaching Aspects of Health and Physical Education (3)
  • PE 532. Organization and Administration in Health and Human Performance (3)

Three hours from the following:

  • PE 510. Protective Techniques for Injuries (3)
  • PE 533. Athletic Administration Seminar (3)
  • PE 534. Sport and Exercise Legal Issues (3)
  • PE 545. The Nature and Basis of Movement (3)
  • PE 573. Prevention, Care, and Treatment of Athletic Injuries (3)

4. Sport Management

Twelve hours from the following:

  • PE 532. Organization and Administration in Health and Human Performance (3)
  • PE 533. Athletic Administration Seminar (3)
  • PE 534. Sport and Exercise Legal Issues (3)
  • PE 565. Psychology and Sociology of Human Performance (3)

Six hours from the following:

  • PE 509. Internship (3)
  • PE 535. Accounting and Economics in Sports (3)
  • PE 537. Sport Management and Marketing (3)
  • PE 539. Sport Management Practicum (3)
  • PE 540. Techniques of Research in Human Performance (3)
  • PE 586. Intramural and Non-Competitive Activities (3)
  • PE 598. Selected Topics in Physical Education (1-3)

B. Elective hours in Physical Education: 9 hours

  • Nine hours in physical education in addition to the courses selected above to meet the desired emphasis (9)

Total Required: 33 hours

Program Completion Requirements

The student shall:

  • Maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or better in all courses in the approved program as verified on an official transcript with no grade less than “C.”
  • Make a satisfactory score on a written comprehensive examination documenting mastery of the curriculum of the program.
