RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research line investigates emotional reactions to threat and the behaviors those emotions motivate. Specifically, I am interested in the emotional experience, the physiology of emotions, how those emotions vary as a function of social variables, and how those emotions influence mental and physical health. My recent research utilizes psychophysiological measures and social psychological theories to study emotions produced from intergroup interactions.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR:

  • Language accents as a symbolic intergroup threat

  • Social acceptance and social rejection’s role in depression

  • Prejudicial humor’s effects on attitudes

  • Intergroup Emotions: Development of a comprehensive theory

  • Electromyographic analysis of emotions in intergroup threat

  • Analysis of the negative emotions produced by intergroup threat

  • Investigating the role of self-awareness in the reduction of misanthropic memory

TEACHING INTERESTS

I believe in dynamic and active learning environments where students are able to experience the material in many different ways. Using multimodal presentations provides a complete sensory experience of the material. This style improves students’ retention and understanding, allowing them to process the information in abstract and applied ways. Adding problem-based exercises that require a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical application provides students with an opportunity to engage the information in an enriching manner.
