Dr. JJ Wedgworth

University Charter School Head of School, Adjunct Instructor

Dr. JJ Wedgworth, a native of Livingston and current resident of Gallion, holds a B.S. degree from Auburn University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Alabama.  She assumed the position as Head of School of University Charter School on September 1, 2017. Previously, she served as Director of Research Integrity of UWA’s Office of Sponsored Programs & Research and Adjunct Faculty for both the UWA College of Education and the UWA College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Prior to this role, she served as Grant Proposal Coordinator and helped facilitate the development of many successful grant applications for the University of West Alabama.  Wedgworth has also served as Chairperson of the UWA Institutional Review Board, Chairperson of the UWA Research Integrity Advisory Board, and an active member of the UWA Campus School Steering Committee and the UWA Charter School Application Team.  Prior to joining UWA, Wedgworth spent 6 years as a Project Manager at the University of Alabama supervising a research program focused on drinking water infrastructure sustainability and health in Alabama’s Black Belt.

Wedgworth is an active participant in the Alabama Academy of Science, where she currently serves as Co-Chair of the Environmental Science Section.  She is also a member of the Society of Research Administrators International, National Council for University Research Administrators, and the Mid-South Educational Research Association. 

Dr. Wedgworth’s significant works include 7 peer-reviewed publications in scholarly journals that reflect her work in the fields of environmental microbiology and active learning in higher education.  She has been a co-PI on numerous federal and private grant awards including an award from the National Science Foundation entitled “Improving Learning Outcomes Via Enhancement of Biology Research” and an award from Steelcase Education to implement an Active Learning Center Classroom on UWA’s campus. 

As a member of the Livingston community for many years, Dr. Wedgworth has served on the Board of Directors at the Livingston Country Club, as President of the UWA Campus School PTA, and as Christian Education Coordinator at Livingston United Methodist Church.  Dr. Wedgworth is married to Donald Evan Wedgworth, Jr. and they have one son, Louis, who is 5 years old.  In her free time she enjoys the outdoors on their farm and spending quality time with her family and friends.
