Description

The Assistant Director of Bands reports to the Director of Bands, assists with administrative duties, and shares in the rehearsal and conducting of the University’s instrumental ensembles. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Director of Bands in administrative duties (i.e. submitting/filing paperwork, requisitions, travel planning, inventory, grading, etc).
  • Conduct the UWA Concert Band (second concert ensemble).
  • Conduct the UWA Side Court Pep Band (basketball pep band) or LU Jazz Band depending on the area of expertise.
  • Assist in rehearsing and conducting other university instrumental ensembles (West Alabama Marching Band, UWA Wind Ensemble, chamber ensembles).
  • Develop relationships with secondary school band directors throughout the state and region.
  • Actively recruit students to The University of West Alabama Band Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Bands and university administration.
  • Coordinate honor bands and other UWA Bands’ events.
  • Manage or assist with all social media presence for the UWA Band Program.
  • Teach individual lessons when necessary.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in conducting/music education or related field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience directing marching and concert ensembles.
  • Experience arranging music and/or designing drill.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Punctuality.
  • Ability to use/learn computer software (Sibelius, Pyware, Google Workspace, etc).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, athletic department, and university administration.

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of teaching experience at the secondary and/or collegiate level.
  • Experience using social media to promote and engage college students in retention-related activities.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Experience directing jazz ensembles.
