At the University of West Alabama (UWA), we encourage creativity through the establishment of Student Organizations. Any enrolled UWA student can apply to start a newly recognized Student Organization. As a new organization, the following resources below will assist in submitting your application for recognition by The University of West Alabama’s Office of Student Life.
An organization that has not been registered with the Office of Student Life and the Student Government Association previously is considered a new organization. All NEW organizations must go through a status called a “Provisional Status” where they will be allowed to discuss the business of the organization. During this timeframe, the organization must do the following:
-
Identify one or more advisors that are full-time faculty and/or staff members (Needed prior to application)
-
Successfully submit a New Student Organization application
-
Provide a roster of at least 8 full-time enrolled students who wish to be members of the proposed organization.
-
Create a constitution under which the organization will operate. A sample constitution can be found under the Student Organization Resources tab
-
Organizations affiliated with an international organization or governing board must submit a letter of recognition from their organization/board. These letters should be on the international organization’s official letterhead and it should identify a point of contact for the international organization or governing board.
New RSO registration applications will be reviewed twice a year. Student groups seeking recognition for the fall semester must have met with the Director of Student Life and submitted all registration materials by October 1. Student groups seeking recognition for the spring semester must have met with the Director of Student Life and submitted all registration materials by February 15.
Once the Office of Student Life has approved the registration form, it is then voted on in the next regularly scheduled SGA meeting. Once approved the group is entitled to all the rights and privileges of a Recognized Student Organization (RSO) and must follow the proper steps to maintain good standing with the university. All new RSOs must wait one semester after approval before the group is eligible to request Student Allocation Funding.
