Youth Development
Our youth development initiatives are vital to our communities. We want to prepare our youth for a successful career because they are the future of West Alabama.
Youth Entrepreneurial Summer Camp
The Youth Entrepreneur Camp teaches students basic skills of owning and running a success business at a young age. The camp features classroom presentations from business professionals across the state. During the four-day camp, students will create and present a business-related project that could be operated in the Black-Belt Region. The camp also features a different field trip each year.
Youth Entrepreneur Success Summit
The Youth Entrepreneur Success Summit is a one-day camp held each May in honor of National Small Business Month. Local high school students gather to hear from several speakers on entrepreneurship, everything from developing a business idea and business plan writing. Participants also have the opportunity to hear a local entrepreneur tell their story.
National Summer Transportation Institute
The Summer Transportation Institute (STI) promotes careers in the transportation industry to high school students. This program focuses on skill enhancement in subject areas assessed on the ACT college entrance exam. It consists of 3 core subjects (English/Writing, Mathematics and Science). Students will also build their technical competency in areas related to transportation and future technological advancements in transportation. Field trips usually included in the program expose the students to the current issues in today’s transportation environment and to various careers in the transportation field.
The program includes education on techniques to apply healthy, productive behaviors to their lives. Guest speakers present on health and wellness topics, such as diet and exercise. Life skills enhancement topics include financial literacy education, which covers the importance of maintaining good credit, how to create and stick to a budget, and how to finance a college education.
