  • Overview of CNA Program

    The Career Pathways for Youth Program: Certified Nursing Assistant Program is aimed at developing a set of employable skills among underemployed and unemployed youth between the ages of 16-21 in the West Alabama Region.

    This program is primarily designed to:

    • Address the shortage of Nurses and Nursing Assistants in rural communities.
    • Help enhance the level of quality healthcare in rural areas.
    • Help reduce the number of individuals who depend upon welfare and other social programs.
    • Have a positive economic impact on depressed communities.

    The theoretical and practical curriculum used focuses on the skills required to obtain a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. The curriculum for the class includes a total of 79 hours, including 55 hours of classroom instruction taught by a registered nurse and 24 hours of clinical application conducted at a skilled nursing facility. The style of instruction is both lecture and clinical-based. Students will be able to take what they have learned in the classroom into practice by completing at least 24 hours of unpaid work experience in a nursing home or assisted-living facility. The program also provides students with hands on skills on how to prepare a résumé and basic computer skills.

    The nursing assistant provides basic needs for patients of any age, ethnicity or gender as they work under supervision. Since nursing assistants have daily contact with patients, they are key to providing vital information about the patients’ conditions to their supervisors.

    The responsibilities of the nursing assistants include: assisting patients who are unable to feed themselves, bathing, grooming, dressing patients, helping patients to move about, measuring intake and output, measuring and recording vital signs, making beds, and observing the patients mental, physical, and emotional condition and reporting to the nursing or medical staff.

    At the completion of the program, students will have learned the following skills required to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA):

    • How to provide basic care to adults of various ages
    • Ways to ensure patient safety
    • Preventing and controlling infection for both yourself and the client
    • Proper body mechanics and mobility techniques to prevent injury
    • Effective communication
    • How to assist your patients with daily living activities
    • Proper feeding techniques for each client condition
    • Main health issues faced by adults in long-term care facilities
    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support
    • Taking vital signs
    • Techniques for moving and ambulating clients
    • Basic hygiene skills Proper client documentation and reporting

    A shortage of nurses and nursing assistants in some areas has led some hospitals and other employers in these areas to offer flexible work schedules, educational benefits, higher pay, and other incentives to retain existing staff and for recruiting. As a result, nursing homes and long-term care facilities will no doubt continue to be major employers. Working in healthcare is also one of the most rewarding and challenging of all professions. One has the opportunity to promote health, serve humanity, and experience the self-satisfaction of a great career.

    According to the United States Department of Labor Statistics, employment of nursing assistants is expected to grow by 20 % from 2010 to 2020. This growth is primarily due to the demand for long-term care for the elderly population. Preparing a trained workforce that possesses the right skills begins with individuals participating in educational and occupational programs that prepare them for entry-level employment.
