 Fishermen of Lake LU

Jay Haffner came to Lake LU today to conduct his September seining survey. On the first 50 foot seine pull he determined that the golden shiner population had not been impacted by bass predation. He determined that due to the vast numbers of golden shiners, we would close Lake LU to bass harvest until further notice. Jay said that he would allow catch and release bass fishing only until he performs an electro-fishing survey of Lake LU in October. At that point he will make a determination whether to continue to allow catch and release bass angling or to totally close the lake to any bass angling.

The new bass regulation reads as follows:
 

BASS HARVEST CLOSED

NO BASS OF ANY SIZE MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE WATERS OF LAKE LU

BASS ANGLERS MAY CATCH AND RELEASE BASS WITH BARBLESS HOOKS ONLY
 

Barbless hooks are simply hooks that have had the barb point turned down with a pair of pliers. This will reduce the chances of bass injury by anglers. According to Jay we need to have every bass in the lake eating golden shiners. Bluegill harvest will continue with the current regulation of 50 bream of any size per person per day. Bluegill anglers may use barbed hooks. If you have any questions please feel free to give me or Jay a call. I will continue to inform you of any changes or recommendations that Jay has.

Lake LU, pronounced Lake “El-Yoo”, is a 54-acre lake on the University campus that provides facilities for fishing, boating and picnicking. The Lake was opened in 1976 and is currently managed by Robby Limerick.

Lake LU has competitive fees for rentals, pavilions and fishing. It’s makes a great location for a family reunion, a romantic outing or a Saturday picnic with the family. Reserve your pavilion today if you are planning a larger event.

Alabama residents age 16 through 64 must have a valid Alabama resident fishing license.
All Alabama residents age 65 and older have no license requirements but must show ID.
All non-residents age 16 and older must have a valid Alabama non-resident fishing license.
