• Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate Approach (ABC)

This is an alternative approach to Alabama professional certification. A certificate may be requested in certain teaching fields for an individual who has met requirements of the AECTP and has earned at least a bachelor’s degree with an overall grade point average of at least 2.5, from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. The required GPA must be the official overall GPA as defined by the degree-granting institution and as posted on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution.

Additional information may be obtained from the Alabama State Dept. of Education at www.alsde.edu or by calling 334-353-8567. All courses are listed for each Alabama institution who offers coursework toward this alternative route. These institutions and courses are listed on the ALSDE’s web site.

Applicants for the ABC approach must complete an application for admission to the School of Graduate Studies, choosing “non-degree” as the status. An applicant would also need to contact the Admission’s Office and notify them that this non-degree status is for the ABC program. Also, it would be helpful if applicants would submit or bring a copy of the letter received from the Alabama SDE to the Graduate Office. This will facilitate the registration process and insure that the correct courses are being taken.

NOTICE: Certification based on the following approaches may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or non-public school administrator. An individual should contact the school system or eligible non-public school in which employment is desired for information concerning job availability.
