The University of West Alabama Library Media program will host a professional development workshop with librarians from ASLA districts 3 and 6 on Sept. 28 in Livingston.

The West Alabama Library Leadership Symposium will provide valuable information and resources for improving libraries across the Black Belt region. Registration is $12 and includes all materials, refreshments and catered lunch.

“We hope librarians will take advantage of this Symposium to rekindle the fire, reignite the passion, and reconnect with colleagues,” said Dr. Susan Cordell, assistant professor of library media at UWA.

The day begins at 8 a.m. with registration and fellowship time. A free pre-symposium workshop for early birds, “You’re 1 in 7 Billion” includes free cross-curricular, P-12 activities CD, and a packet of supplementary materials.

The symposium begins at 10 a.m. with “Rekindle the Fire: Be an Advocate for Your Profession,” where participants will learn tools for promoting library media.

At 11 a.m., “Reignite the Passion: How Educate Alabama and Core Standards Impact Your Library” will explore policies set forth by the State and the ways libraries must respond.

After a working lunch and break, “Reconnect With Your Colleagues in Your District” will provide networking opportunities for librarians to consult and share ideas or resources.

The Symposium closes with an evaluation at 2 p.m., followed by a free post-symposium workshop.
