    The University of West Alabama is located three blocks from downtown Livingston, which has a population of approximately 3,190 local residents.  Situated in rural West Central Alabama, Livingston is the county seat of Sumter County.  The county has no metropolitan areas.  The closest urban area, Meridian, Mississippi (population 39,968), is located 60 kilometers west of Livingston.  The state capital, Montgomery (population 201,568), is 209 kilometers to the east of Livingston, and the state’s largest city, Birmingham (population 242,820), is situated 187 kilometers northeast of the university town.  Livingston’s location on Interstate Highways 20 and 59, United States Highway 11, and Alabama Highway 28 facilitates travel to and from the area.
