The University of West Alabama’s Dr. Tim Edwards, provost, and Dr. Ken Tucker, dean of college of business, participated in commencement ceremonies of UWA’s partner university, Guangdong University of Finance, in Guangzhou, China, on June 21, 2014.

UWA had 31 business students receive their bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting through the collaborative 2+2 dual degree program, whereby select Chinese students complete their first two years of undergraduate study at GDUF and then complete their junior and senior years at UWA, whereupon they receive a diploma from both universities.

These same students participated in UWA’s commencement ceremony on May 10, 2014. An astounding 100% of this second cohort of program students who applied to graduate school have been accepted, with significant scholarship awards, into the highest ranked universities in the United States and overseas.

While in China, Edwards and Tucker signed collaborative agreements with three new universities: Dalian Maritime University, Jiaotong University and Jiaying University, and met with many current and prospective students and their parents. These agreements establish a framework to explore such mutually advantageous forms of educational cooperation as short-term faculty and student exchange, dual degree programs, joint research, and cultural awareness and management training programs.

Edwards and Tucker also met with high level GDUF officials to discuss additional modes of cooperation, as the current strong partnership has proved beneficial on many fronts, including enhanced cultural awareness, expanded global perspective, increased international business understanding, and quality preparation for graduate school and successful careers. Both U.S. and Chinese students have learned much from each other, as well as their professors.
