Launched this spring, the marketing major at the University of West Alabama (UWA) College of Business gives students firsthand experience in a diverse, fast-growing industry.

“In virtually every course they take, marketing students will gain valuable experience as they work with local businesses to develop marketing plans, advertising plans, and press releases,” said Dr. Russ Henley, associate professor of marketing at UWA. That real-world experience will translate into an advantage post-graduation, as they compete for positions in marketing management, advertising, sales, purchasing, and market research.

“Marketing graduates are in much demand and enjoy excellent average starting salaries and significant upward mobility,” said Dr. Ken Tucker, dean of UWA’s College of Business.

The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov) expects employment in marketing and related fields to grow by as much as 26 percent through 2018. CNN/Money (money.cnn.com) recently ranked “marketing specialist” number five among “Best Jobs for Fast Growth,” citing an estimated 28 percent growth in jobs over the next decade. Management-level workers in marketing fields earn from $50,000 to $90,000, Henley said, while marketing directors take in as much as $200,000.

Less than one month after its creation, the marketing major is already a hit, Henley said. “Student response and demand has been tremendous. Ten students have already changed their major to marketing within the first three weeks of it being offered.”

The UWA College of Business has long offered an emphasis in marketing as part of its general business curriculum, Henley said, but market demand and requests from current and prospective students spurred development of a full-fledged major program.

“The marketing program builds on the existing strengths of our Department of Business Administration, Management and Marketing,” Henley said.

“Marketing is one of the primary disciplines within most colleges of business throughout the state,” Tucker noted. “Current and prospective students’ demand for this degree has increased, making it feasible to transition our marketing minor into a major and establish a more competitive position state-wide.”

The hands-on aspect of the marketing major also benefits local business and industry. “Last semester, marketing students developed a marketing plan for Tucker Cabinetry of Linden, Ala. This semester, marketing students will again work with Tucker Cabinetry to implement that plan,” Henley said. “UWA marketing students are also working with Choctaw County political and business leaders to develop a website promoting area businesses.”

Tucker gives credit for the new program’s creation to Henley and to Dr. Linda Carr, chair of the Department of Business Administration, Management and Marketing. “They are to be commended on preparing an excellent proposal to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, which approved the major to begin January 2012.”

“Adding a major in marketing complements nicely our existing business curriculum and offers interested students another option for career enhancement,” Tucker said.
