The University of West Alabama’s Center for Achievement, Retention, and Enrichment Services (UWA CARES) will host two 2017 Summer Leadership Camps for rising, Senior high school students May 30-June 3, 2017 and July 26-30, 2017.

Students selected to participate in these residential camps must meet the following criteria: be African American males attending high school in Choctaw, Clarke, Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Pickens, Sumter, or Wilcox counties and be selected by their high school counselor.

The purpose of the leadership camps is to facilitate the development of leadership skills, critical thinking skills, and team-building skills and increase motivation and self-esteem in African American, male students.

“These camps are the first of their kind at UWA and are made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Education. The camps will strengthen leadership skills and potential in young men who can have a significant impact on their schools and communities,” says Angel Jowers, the Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Retention and program director of the UWA CARES grant.

The camp agenda will include the following: presentations by UWA faculty and administration on developing and fostering leadership skills; UWA 101, a class designed to introduce students to the college classroom setting and how to succeed in higher education; Leadership 101, a class designed to examine what it means to be a leader in today’s world; business luncheon with UWA alumni; team building activities such as scavenger hunts and basketball tournaments; and other activities designed to increase leadership skills, critical thinking skills, and team-building skills.

Participants must be selected by their high school counselor or principal before completing an application, and the application will only be accepted if accompanied by a counselor/principal reference and signature. All completed applications must be returned by Friday, April 28.

Approximately 20 students will be selected to participate in each one-week camp.

All costs for the participant are covered, including room and board; facility usage, including the UWA Fitness Center; field trip travel; and speakers.
