The University of West Alabama celebrated a milestone achievement recently with the presentation of a $15 million check to the University from the UWA Foundation. The evening ceremony marked the successful completion of “The University We Will Be” capital campaign.

A host of UWA administrators, trustees and supporters gathered at Bell Conference Center on campus to celebrate what is the University’s first capital campaign. Clemit Spruiell, vice president for institutional advancement, welcomed guests and commended all who supported the campaign.

“We are very proud to be here tonight to announce the completion of this capital campaign,” Spruiell said. “This night is a celebration for the dedication and undying support of a tremendous group of people who have seen us through trying economic times with unwavering support.”

Spruiell remarked that in the early stages of planning the capital campaign, there was a notion to cancel the entire plan in light of the nation’s economy, which has seen its most devastating numbers since the Great Depression.

“We considered canceling the campaign, but we were confident in the support we had seen among our alumni and friends and among our faculty and staff,” Spruiell said. “We decided to persevere, and we are all glad we did.”

University President Richard D. Holland accepted the $15 million dollar check on behalf of UWA and offered his gratitude to all who helped reach the goal, from the school’s development staff to the contributors.

"The remarkable success of this campaign is the result of many, many hours of hard work over the last several years, and we owe a great deal of gratitude and applause to every one who has given of their time and resources to see it through," Holland said.

Thanks to the campaign, Holland said, the array of campus improvements and enhanced offerings are leading the 177-year-old institution to match the campaign’s moniker.

"The University has been forever changed by this capital campaign," said UWA President Richard D. Holland. "The campaign has added a new dimension to every aspect of this campus and has created a heightened sense of pride in every area from academics to athletics to aesthetics,” he said.

Spruiell said that throughout the campaign a goal was to enhance the sense of pride surrounding the University.

“This campaign has been a source of pride for faculty, staff, students and alumni. With public support declining throughout the past few years, the fact that we sought private funding and were successful sends a resounding message that UWA has a strong and promising future,” Spruiell said.
