The Alabama Power Foundation has renewed its support of the UWA Center for Business and Economic Services by presenting a $70,000 check to Dr. Ken Tucker, UWA College of Business dean. Representing Alabama Power Company were Western Division Vice President Mark Crews, Western Division Manager Joseph Brown and Business Manager for Greene and Sumter Counties Danny Cooper.

Following the presentation, Alabama Power Company representatives noted that multi-year foundation grants like this one are rare. Also outlined at the meeting were action items that will compose the 2012 work plan for CBES.

“The continued investment,” said Billy McFarland, CBES director, “in the Center for Business and Economic Services is testament to the confidence which the Alabama Power Foundation has in our work.”

McFarland said he appreciated their generosity, and that he was also thankful for the executives' expertise and guidance in helping develop a work plan for 2012. The implementation of this plan, according to McFarland, was his first priority as the Center continues to focus on the needs of existing business and industry.

This foundation grant began in February 2011, when the CBES received from the Alabama Power Foundation a $210,000 grant through “The University We Will Be” campaign to spearhead comprehensive economic and community development efforts in the Black Belt region.

Tucker believes the University is the single most important force for change and improvement in the Black Belt, and this grant will make a meaningful difference in the quality of life for all West Alabama residents.

“We greatly appreciate the Alabama Power Foundation’s generous gift, as the benefits will be seen for years to come in the economically challenged region we serve,” Tucker said. “This substantial investment allows us to fully establish the Center for Business and Economic Services and positively impact the Black Belt’s overall community and economic development efforts.”

“The University We Will Be” campaign is an ongoing initiative to raise $15 million in gifts and pledges by 2012 for the University of West Alabama. These funds will improve campus facilities, provide scholarships, enhance the campus learning environment, support the faculty and fund community outreach projects.
