LIVINGSTON, Ala.—The University of West Alabama Theatre 2010-11 season continues Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 with Lynn Nottage’s “Intimate Apparel,” winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and the Outer Critics Circle awards.

“Intimate Apparel” is the complex and moving portrait of Ester, a middle-aged African-American woman who lives in a boarding house for women and sews intimate apparel for women of all walks of life. While Ester is privy to the intimate details of her clients’ lives, she has been unable to find a husband with whom she can share the intimacies of her own life. She becomes torn between two worlds – the idealized romance drawn from the letters of her Caribbean suitor, George Armstrong, and the bittersweet reality of an impossible relationship with a Jewish shopkeeper, Mr. Marks.

“I think that when theatre is at its best, it both entertains and informs the audience,” said UWA Theatre director Arthur Grothe. “‘Intimate Apparel’ accomplishes both of these goals, by offering a poignant commentary on the delicacy of relationship, the intricacies of love, and the complexities of an era where the color of one’s skin could dictate the outcome of one’s life.”

Cast members include Kyla Candies, Camden; Clare Findley, Cuba; Mary Nicholson, Gordo; Daniel Ochocki, Northport; LeAnthony Walker, Birmingham; and Ashley Betts, Meridian, Miss.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly at UWA’s Bibb Graves Auditorium. General admission is $10. UWA students, faculty and staff are admitted free with proper ID. For more information or to reserve tickets, call 205-652-3633.
