• UWA confers degrees May 7

     LIVINGSTON, Ala.—The University of West Alabama will honor more than 700 graduates during spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 7. The ceremony takes place at 10:30 a.m. in Pruitt Gymnasium on the UWA campus, with the Presidential Reception open to all graduates and their guests beginning at 8 a.m. in the Bell Conference Center.

    The University will confer degrees in the colleges of Business, Education, Liberal Arts, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics; the Division of Nursing; and the School of Graduate Studies.

    In addition to recognizing student honorees, three UWA professors will be awarded emeritus honors. Dr. Tom W. DeVaney, education professor and dean of graduate studies, will be named Emeritus Professor of Education for his 28 years of service. James D. Shelton, technology professor, will be named Emeritus Professor of Technology for his 31 years of service. Dr. Louis R. Smith, Jr., professor of education and former dean of online programs, will be named Emeritus Professor of Education for his 22 years of service.

    The University will award an honorary doctorate to E. Lyle Cain, Jr., M.D., of Birmingham. Highly regarded as one of the premier orthopaedic surgeons in the country, Cain has cultivated a following in Alabama’s Black Belt of appreciative student athletes, enthusiastic sports medicine professionals and students, and friends. His efforts have helped UWA become a leader in producing quality graduates in the field of athletic training and sports medicine

    President Richard D. Holland will also announce the William E. Gilbert Award for Outstanding Teaching, given annually at commencement to recognize excellence in classroom instruction, and Provost David M. Taylor will present the Ralph M. Lyon Award, given to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average.

    Guests must have tickets, which are available from the graduates, to attend the ceremony in Pruitt Gym. Overflow seating to watch the commencement exercises will be available in the Bell Conference Center. For more information, call 205-652-3833.
