    Chair, Division of Nursing

Welcome to the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing here at The University of West Alabama. Here, we challenge you to become a part of something bigger than yourself, to do something that matters. At the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing, the faculty, staff, students, and graduates are constantly striving to live up to that call. Nursing is a career that embodies caring for others and saving lives…that matters.

As you earn your Associate of Science Degree in nursing, the faculty and staff will promote an atmosphere that encourages an independent and critical thinker. We will collaborate with you to nurture your curiosity and develop a passion for lifelong learning. We strive to support the creation of a diverse workforce that can manage the health care needs of a socially, culturally, an economically diverse and complex clientele. With this endeavor in mind, it is the expectation of the Division of Nursing that our graduates will honor and respect the dignity and self-worth of all individuals, and value the diversity found in our global community.

Because nurses touch the lives of individuals across their lifespan, from birth to death, the possibilities for a future in nursing are countless. You can begin and end your career with the satisfaction of caring for patients at the bedside in the nursery, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatrics, obstetrics, acute care, emergency room, critical care, or hospice nursing. Or, you can choose to further your education and your career with an advanced degree and become a nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, or nurse educator. These are only a few of the career options that a degree in nursing can offer. But in order to become a nurse and pass the National Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, you must begin somewhere.

We ask that you consider beginning your journey with us! The path to a successful career are endless and the faculty at the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing invite you to join us and begin a fulfilling journey to do something that matters.
