• John G. Blackwell


    John G. Blackwell serves as President of the University of West Alabama. He is the chairman of INKANA Properties, a Birmingham based health care developer.

    A past member of the Auburn Alumni Association Board, Blackwell was appointed to the Auburn University Board of Trustees in 1999 and served until 2013. In addition to serving as the board’s president pro tempore, he served as chair of its Property and Facilities Committee, which oversaw $1.2 billion of construction in 10 years.

    As a college athlete, Blackwell was named an All-SEC player. On the court, he served as captain of the Auburn University basketball team and president of the A Club.

    He holds a 1964 bachelor’s degree in business from Auburn University. He completed the coursework for a doctorial degree at the University of Montevallo and the University of Alabama.

    Over the course of his more than 20 years in higher education administration, he has served as CFO for two state universities, the University of West Alabama (then Livingston State College) and the University of Montevallo. He was budget director for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Auburn University, he worked as a development officer. He also served as CFO for the City of Huntsville.

    Blackwell wrote and published ABC’s of Auburn, a children’s book illustrating Auburn University traditions.

    In June of 2005, Blackwell married Shirley J. Andrews, and together they enjoy eight grandchildren, fitness activities, and educational travel. Mr. Blackwell has three sons, Taylor, Slade, and Austin. Shirley has one son, Deke Herrin.
