• Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)

    Up to four Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) positions are available in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of West Alabama. These GTAs are intended to provide students with an opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience by working closely with a faculty member in undergraduate courses. These positions are supported by a National Science Foundation grant.



    1. Enrolled as a full-time graduate student at UWA during the semester(s) appointed as a graduate assistant. Full-time enrollment is considered nine graduate credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and six graduate credit hours during the summer semester.
    2. Maintain a 3.0 GPA.
    3. Make satisfactory progress toward his/her degree.
    4. Meet requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.


    1. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative and manage multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
    2. Teaching experience is a plus, but not required.


    The GTA duties will include, but are not limited to:

    1. Assist lab instructors prepare and conduct laboratory activities of Honors Biology, Microbiology, Molecular and Microbial Biology, Genetics, and Research in Biology courses.
    2. Prepare new solutions, assure that all chemicals/solutions/supplies are in stock.
    3. Prepare and take down labs every week.
    4. Keep labs neat, clean, and orderly.
    5. Proctor lab practicum, grade papers, run classroom related errands, and perform other basic tasks as needed by the overseeing professor.


    A full assistantship requires a student to work for 20 hours per week on average. Students may be required to report to work during school breaks. A partial assistantship may be offered. GTAs may earn up to $1,300 per month based on experience and performance.
