Welcome to the University of West Alabama’s Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The mission of our department is to provide opportunities for students to pursue a quality education and to assist in the students’ development of critical thinking and hand-on skills so that they can realize their quests for a life of self-fulfillment. Simply, we are here to help students succeed in their endeavors.

The Department has made positive strides to change the scientific culture at UWA by placing greater emphasis on undergraduate research. It has been shown that it is undergraduate research that best equips students with the tools and critical thinking skills needed to address the problems they face individually and as global citizens. Several years ago, this department spearheaded the initiation of an annual Undergraduate Research Symposium where students are afforded the opportunity to present their research finding to their peers, faculty and the UWA community. This initiative has been met with much success, and we anticipate broadening the scope of the symposium by allowing researchers from universities in the surrounding region to participate.

We offer Bachelor of Science degrees in several programs: Biology (with a minor in any field or a concentration in Medical or Conservation and Field Biology), Marine Biology, Environmental Science (either comprehensive, or part of a 3+2 program with concentrations in Forestry or Wildlife), and Teacher Certification in General Science. In several of our programs, students have the opportunity to participate in internships at research institutions or local companies and agencies, some of which may serve as future employers.

A popular quote states, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” This statement echoes the sentiment of the faculty in our department. We have a genuine concern for each of our students, and we want them to reach their potential. Come and be part of the UWA family and “do something that matters.” We would be glad to have you.
